Housing Authority of Champaign County Is Closed in Observance of Juneteenth
Champaign, IL. June 18, 2021. The Housing Authority of Champaign County's (HACC) is closed Friday for the first time in history to celebrate the brand-new U.S. holiday Juneteenth. Juneteenth commemorated the date when the last slaves learned they were free on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas. This was nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
"With this action, Champaign County can finally come together to celebrate and acknowledge Juneteenth for its significance in American history," said Lily L. Walton, HACC's Executive Director.
