Housing Authority of Champaign County’s Senior Residents Receives Covid-19 Vaccine

Champaign, IL. March 8, 2021. The Housing Authority of Champaign County's (HACC) in partnership with the Champaign-Urbana Public Health Department will be vaccinating the senior residents and essential staff members on March 9-15, 2021. This would ensure that seniors with low-income, who have been disproportionally affected by COVID-19, will be vaccinated in the vaccine distribution process.

The high-density environments in senior affordable housing place HACC's buildings at a high risk for rapid COVID spread. With many residents in mid 50s and 60s, such spread would surely result in a very high number of lengthy hospitalizations and death. Many affordable senior housing sites have populations that mirror those in assisted living settings and even nursing homes and need the vaccinations urgently.

"Equity and access to support services is the driving force of our community housing strategy, vaccine doses must go directly to those who need them most," Interim Executive Director, Lily Walton said. "That's why we're meeting our most vulnerable where they are, providing vaccines to our HACC seniors right in their own communities."
